Although not a complete failure (I did greatly decrease the time I spent in front of a screen which was the goal), my “Screen-Free Sunday” was disappointing. I neglected a critical aspect. It goes to show that anybody can fail if they’re not careful about planning things out.

I wouldn’t consider it to be a failure. Where I failed at was where I started. I neglected one of my foundational principles. When you are wanting to make a change, change only one thing. Instead of boycotting all screens on Sunday right off the bat, I should’ve eliminated only one. For example, instead of saying no TV, no computer, AND no phone, I should have said no TV, no computer, OR no phone.

It’s a process and it needs to have steps. I implement this with all my clients but failed to implement it in this personal endeavor. No worries. I’ve learned from my mistake and I know what I need to do to correct it.

If you had a similar fail to me, I apologize. Quite frankly, I set you up for failure. Please, accept my apology and implement the following step(s) to set you up for success on Sunday.

1. Only change ONE behavior.
Pick the one that you are most frustrated and/or capable of letting go. If Sunday is your family movie night, it’s probably not realistic to give up TV. If you track your macros on your computer via excel spreadsheets, it’s probably not the best idea to give up your computer (guilty).

I did give up looking at my phone for a few exceptions in which I needed to text a friend to ask about an arrangement (unavoidable). I feel like going forward giving up my phone for “Screen-Free Sunday’s” is my best bet. I will look to better my performance from last Sunday and continually get better every week.

2. Only change ONE behavior.
I told you to keep it simple. That’s the first step and only step really. Once that one change becomes customary, change another. Repeat until you are overall satisfied.

Whatever it may be, start with the simplest, effective change. It doesn’t have to be revolutionary or ground-breaking. Take that first step and see where it goes from there.

Whether it’s starting a new weight loss plan, creating new habits, or ridding your life of time-wasters, follow the one step process and be well on your way.

To your success!
